ON A MILD winter’s day in December, Katie Barnfield from ITV London News came to High Barnet Station to interview me about the London Underground Caricature project. In spite of all my bumbling and line-fluffing Katie’s expertise and that of the production team made sure that the edit and presentation made me look almost human! The whole process began when I sent presenter Duncan Golestani his framed caricature and information about the year-long project. He was kind enough to show his picture on air as you can see here:
It’s nice to get a bit of publicity not only for London Underground Caricatures but for the art of caricaturing in general.
IT’S A WRAP! I have completed caricatures of celebrities for all of London Underground’s Tube network. Two hundred and sixty-eight in total and although I never intended to, several stations got more than one celeb.
Having completed a diary in 2019 with a caricature on each page of celebs on their birthdates, I decided to keep myself busy with another year-long task with London Underground Caricatures. I never knew how useful it was going to be to have this reason to focus on an activity. It has certainly come in handy during some of the bleaker months to bury myself in endless drawing.
It was not always easy finding famous people associated with some stations, hence some of the more obscure personalities. And it wasn’t always easy finding the right mix of photos to actually do a person justice. So many photos, strangely enough, simply do not look like the person. And the highly-polished, posed and made up profile shots give little detail necessary to a true caricature likeness. In the event that one or two of the slightly interested parties do go ahead to make something commercial out of this, I can foresee a lot of revisions taking place. For instance, Amy Winehouse should surely more appropriately be placed at Camden Town, not East Finchley! I shall just await the all-important exciting phone call/email.
Now that this is over I may get back to more painting.
However, I’ve just noticed that there are 650 Constituency MPs in the Houses of Parliament . . .
